With the addition of Carroll's name and three others, there are now 20 persons who have filed nomination papers, with six days left until the Nov. 20 filing deadline.

Others filing yesterday were Marshall (Koo Koo) Turner of Lihu'e, Herbert Jensen of Hilo, and Brian Cole of Kihei, Maui.

Carroll received 7,616 votes as a candidate for the Republican nomination for governor this year, a distant second to Linda Lingle with 70,798 votes.

He ran unsuccessfully against U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka in 2000.

A Hawaiian Airlines pilot from 1958 to 1989, Carroll was elected in 1972 to represent Waikiki and later Manoa in the state House and Senate.

Democrat Mink, 74, who had served Hawai'i in the U.S. House for 24 years, died Sept. 28 after a monthlong bout with viral pneumonia, two days too late to have her name removed from the general election ballot. She won in the general election. A special election will be held Nov. 30 to fill the last five weeks of Mink's term in Congress. Her husband, John Mink, is a candidate for that position along with 37 others.
