UH Warriors win over Rice

HOUSTON — Timmy Chang passed for 369 yards and two touchdowns, and Hawai'i stopped Rice on fourth down from the Warriors' 11-yard line with 8 seconds left to preserve a 33-28 victory today.

Chang connected on 35 of 64 passes for Hawaii (8-2, 7-1 Western Athletic Conference).

Marcus Battle led Rice (4-7, 3-5) with a 54-yard touchdown catch and a 60-yard TD run.

Greg Henderson came off the bench in the fourth quarter and hit Battle for the 54-yard score with 4:34 left to get Rice within five points.

The Owls got the ball back, but Houston Ala stopped Henderson for a 1-yard loss on fourth down.

Hawai'i took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, on a 4-yard run by Thero Mitchell. The Owls answered with a 4-yard touchdown run by Robbie Beck, then took a 14-7 lead on Beck's 32-yard run with 3:11 left in the half.

Chang passed 8 yards to Jeremiah Cockheran midway through the third quarter to give the Warriors a 16-14 lead. Just 57 seconds later, Chang hit Britton Komine with a 17-yard TD pass for a 23-14 lead.

Rice cut the deficit to 23-21 on a 60-yard touchdown run by Battle with 6:45 left in the third period, but the Warriors got a 21-yard field goal by Justin Ayat and 3-yard TD run by Mitchell to move ahead 33-21.
