Crash victims remain critical

A 1-year-old girl and 29-year-old man, injured in separate auto crashes this week in La'ie and Ka'a'awa, respectively, remained in critical condition yesterday at The Queen's Medical Center.

The girl was in a Mazda MPV that veered off Kamehameha Highway shortly before noon Sunday near Lanihuli Place and landed on its side.

The crash killed her 2-month-old brother, who was ejected from the vehicle, which was being driven by her father, 29.

The man and his wife, 30, and two other children, ages 6 and 5, are recovering from injuries.

The man involved in the Ka'a'awa crash at 9:11 p.m. Wednesday was driving a sports utility vehicle that struck a utility pole after exiting Swanzy Beach Park, police said.

Fire damages Waipahu home

Fire scorched portions of a Waipahu home yesterday afternoon, but left no one hurt.

The fire broke out at 4:52 p.m. in the kitchen of 94-1249 Huakai St., but family members put it out before firefighters arrived, said Honolulu Fire spokesman Capt. Kenison Tejada.

Because electricity to the home needed to be shut down, Red Cross workers were sent to assist the family, Tejada said.

Damage to the home has yet to be determined.
