Big Island's Hugh Clark downshifts just a bit
On the Big Island of Hawai'i, there are some things you can count on:
Mayor Harry Kim will always tell it like it is.
If you spend any time at all in Hilo, you'll get a chance to enjoy the rain.
The majestic volcanic mountains will always be there in the background, offering beauty and danger.
Politics will always be a blood sport.
And if there is news happening, Hugh Clark was there. At least through yesterday, at any rate.
After 31 years as The Advertiser's Big Island bureau chief, Clark is retiring. He will be replaced by Kevin Dayton.
Clark is a reporter of the old school who believes in personal contacts, shoe leather and determination. He knows Hawai'i County inside and out.
So, while Hugh is retiring from the hurly-burly of daily deadline journalism, he'll still be keeping a watchful eye on events in his county. He wouldn't know any other way to do it.
