Warriors take boys' title

By Wes Nakama

WAIPAHU — Kamehameha Schools senior J.B. Bolson said he hates the 3-mile cross country course at Central O'ahu Regional Park, and the mud and rain yesterday morning only added to his distaste.

But it's a place Bolson will always remember, especially whenever he looks at the first-place koa trophy he received after speeding through the slippery grass and asphalt in 16 minutes, 36 seconds at the Honolulu Marathon Hawai'i State High School Athletic Association Championship meet.

Bolson's performance helped the Warriors win their sixth straight team title. Punahou was second, Hawai'i Prep third, Iolani fourth and 'Aiea fifth.

Among individuals, Iolani's Patrick Morrissey (16:49) took second, Maui's Nick Jachowski (16:53) placed third, Kea'au's Joshua Enos (16:56) was fourth and Hawai'i Prep's Jared Chapman (16:58) ended up fifth.

"I actually hate this course — it's too flat," Bolson said. "But I knew I had to run it, so I had to learn to like it, I guess."

After the race, Kamehameha coach Steve Jenness said Bolson and the course might have been a good fit after all.

"I think he likes it more than he knows," Jenness said. "He started running really well about a month ago, and that's when we knew he had a good chance to pull this out."

Morrissey said the course was "tailor-made" for him, but Bolson proved to be too strong.

"I run better in flats, so I felt comfortable on this course," Morrissey said. "We were running together for awhile, but then he and Nick separated themselves right before the 2-mile mark. J.B. took the lead on the backside up a hill and then he started to really push the pace."

Bolson said a good start was key to his race, and he was able to not let the mud and rain affect him.

"I knew it'd be slower, but mud and rain are part of cross country," Bolson said. "We don't always run on asphalt. If we did, it wouldn't be cross country, it'd be track."

The Warriors placed five other runners in the top 31 — Sam Wescoatt (17:20, 12th), Jeremy Kamaka'ala (17:214th), Adam Mendez-Anchet (17:215th), Aaron Domingo (17:54, 28th) and Jerad Kamaka'ala (17:531st). The final Kamehameha runner was Aaron Souza (19:196th).

"We're so young, two of them are freshmen," Jenness said. "They've come a long way. It's been a long ride since August. It's a special group."
