Pearl City, Kailua win bowling crowns

The Pearl City girls successfully defended their state bowling crown yesterday, while the Charger boys were unable to repeat, falling to Kailua at Lihue Lanes on Kaua'i.

The Pearl City girls finished with 7,813 over the two-day tournament to top Hawai'i Baptist Academy, which finished at 7,541.

Samantha Masuda of Kapolei captured the girls individual title, finishing with a nine-game total of 1,787. Jodi-Ann Gum of Pearl City was second with 1,744.

Kailua won the boys title with 8,832 to Pearl City's 8,699.

Bronson Teramoto of Kailua, a two-time O'ahu Interscholastic League individual champion, won the boys title with 2,003. Pearl City's Jesse Cummings was second at 1,977.

GOLF

Fribley, Wie lead: Chad Fribley shot a 4-under-par 68 yesterday to take the first-round lead at the Hawai'i State Open at Makena Golf Course on Maui.

Michelle Wie, a 13-year-old, leads the women's division after shooting a 5-under 67.

Fribley has a one-shot lead over Tom Eubank and amateur Jonathan Ota.

Wie has a six-shot lead over Dawn Kaneshiro, who was 1 over. Cindy Rarick opened with a 74.

In the senior division, Mike Iyoki shot a 3-under 69 and has a four-shot lead over Wendell Kop, Donald McClintock, Daniel Nishimoto and Dean Prince.

The tournament continues today and tomorrow.

VOLLEYBALL

La Pietra tops Punahou: Alicia Arnott had 34 kills to lead La Pietra to an upset over Punahou, 15-13, 8-15, 16-14, yesterday to move one step closer to securing the Interscholastic League of Honolulu's second berth into the state tournament.

Aneli Cubi-Otineru led the Buffanblu with 29 kills.

La Pietra takes on Iolani today at 1 p.m. at Kamehameha in a playoff for the state berth.

WATER POLO

BYUH holds off Chaminade: The Brigham Young University-Hawai'i men's water polo team topped Chaminade, 8-7, in overtime last night at Lai'e.

Jordan Brink and Vanja Kalabic scored three goals each for the Seasiders, who end the regular season at 15-9 and will next play in the Western Water Polo Association playoffs in San Diego beginning Friday.

The Silverswords fell to 10-7.

BASKETBALL

Seasiders rip Japan squad: Scott Salisbury scored 19 points and reigning Pacific West Conference Player of the Year Alexus Foyle added 18 in Brigham Young-Hawai'i's 106-41 rout of Kinki University of Japan last night in the Asia-Pacific Invitational at Lai'e.

Shawn Opunui had 11 assists for the Seasiders.

The Fiji national team beat Jiao Tong University of China, 111-94, in another game.
