St. Joseph girls get top seed in state volleyball tournament

St. Joseph, the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion, received the top seed in the Nissan Girls State Volleyball Championships Wednesday through Saturday at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo.

The Cardinals are 15-0 this season.

Kamehameha, the undefeated Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion (15-0), is the No. 2 seed, followed by O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion Kahuku (12-2) and Maui Interscholastic League champion Seabury Hall (14-0). The top four seeds receive byes in the 12-team tournament and open play on Thursday.

ILH runner-up and defending state champion Iolani (13-3) will face Kalaheo (8-5), which was fourth in the OIA, in a first-round match.

Rounding out the 12-team field are Hawai'i Prep (13-2) and Kealakehe (12-4) of the BIIF; Moanalua (11-2) and Pearl City (11-2) of the OIA; Maui (11-4) of the Maui Interscholastic League and Kaua'i Interscholastic League champion Waimea (8-1).
