MORE VOLLEYBALL

• BYUH opens regionals: The Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's volleyball team received the No. 2 seed yesterday in the Pacific Regional of the NCAA II National Championship Tournament, Thursday through Saturday, at Cal State-San Bernardino.

The Seasiders (22-2), who won the Pacific West Conference, receive a first-round bye and Friday will face the winner of Thursday's match between No. 3 seed Western Washington and No. 6 Cal State-Los Angeles.

The winner of Friday's match will advance to Saturday's regional championship.

Host Cal State-San Bernardino is the No. 1 seed in the region.

• Lacro resigns: Lyman Lacro, who coached or assisted coaching seven straight state high-school championship teams, has resigned as Punahou School boys coach, athletic director Tom Holden announced yesterday.

Lacro said he was leaving to concentrate on completing his master's degree to open more opportunities for himself professionally.

Lacro, a former Waimea High (1986 graduate) and University of Hawai'i (1987-90) setter, won state titles as Punahou's head coach from 1994-96 and as assistant to Scott Rigg from 1997-2000. He was re-appointed head coach in 2001 when Rigg retired and coached the past two seasons.

Lacro said he will continue to teach physical education at Star of the Sea elementary school.

"Lyman represents all that is good about athletics," Holden said. "He wins and loses with great character and consistently gets the most out of his players.

"Punahou will figure out a way to get him back in one of our programs after he completes his master's degree."

Lacro said, "I hope so. It will be hard to be away."

SURFING

• Meets postponed: The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing was postponed yesterday because of insufficient conditions at Hale'iwa Ali'i Beach.

The men's Vans Hawaiian Pro is in the third round of competition; the women's Roxy Pro is in the second round.

Both events are the first of three in the respective men's and women's Triple Crown series.

Contest officials have until Saturday to complete both events.
