Man in custody after bank robbery

Police yesterday arrested a 34-year-old man in Kaka'ako on suspicion of bank robbery.

The man was taken into custody at 5:02 p.m., two hours after a robbery at Hawai'i National Bank, at 45 N. King St., was reported. The man reportedly contacted his probation officer, who notified police. The man, who was taken into custody at 300 Ala Moana, surrendered without incident.

No one was injured in the robbery, in which in which the robber handed a teller a note demanding cash. The case has been turned over to federal authorities for prosecution, police said.

Robbery charges pending against trio

Robbery charges stemming from a purse-snatching are pending against a 21-year-old man and two 17-year-old boys who were arrested early yesterday morning at a DUI checkpoint in Waikiki.

The trio was arrested on suspicion of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle at 12:15 a.m. at Monsarrat and Le'ahi avenues. They were in a car with a punched-out ignition that was discovered to be an unreported auto theft, police said.

Police were alerted to the car by a witness to a purse-snatching that had occurred earlier.

Sexual assault at school investigated

Police are investigating a reported sexual assault that allegedly occurred during school hours at a Leeward area high school.

A boy, 15, was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a girl, 16, in a restroom at 2 p.m. Police have released the boy without charges pending further investigation.

Ship passenger receives medevac

A Coast Guard helicopter was sent today from Air Station Barbers Point to pick up a 70-year-old cruise ship passenger in need of medical attention. The Coast Guard was expecting to meet the Norwegian Star cruise ship at 11 a.m. about 50 miles south of the Big Island.

The helicopter will take the Kona man, who is suffering from an upper respiratory infection, to Kona Community Hospital. The medical evacuation was requested at 12:45 a.m. today by the ship's doctor. The Norwegian Star, which is headed to Fanning Isle, was about 200 miles south of the Big Island at the time.

Investigators seek fraud suspect

State welfare fraud investigators are trying to find a 45-year-old woman who allegedly obtained $20,000 in public assistance benefits through fraud.

Leslie Eileen Morimoto is being sought in connection with a fraud case.

Leslie Eileen Morimoto, also known as Leslie Eileen Kendall, was indicted in August for first-degree theft. The charge stems from welfare assistance she received from March 1, 1999, to July 31, 2000.
