Baby stillborn in Kalalau Valley
LIHU'E, Kaua'i A 34-year-old woman camping in Kalalau Valley gave birth to a stillborn child early Sunday.
The mother was flown out of the valley by rescue helicopter Sunday morning after the Fire Department received a report of an SOS signal written on the sand at Kalalau Beach.
A press release issued by the mayor's office yesterday said the woman, who had a Kaua'i address, had been eight months pregnant. She was evacuated to Wilcox Hospital for treatment. No other information on her identity or condition was available.
The baby's body was buried by the father in the valley. Kaua'i police and officers of the state Department of Land and Natural Resources went into the valley yesterday to try to recover the body.
Man, 81, dies after Nov. 5 accident
An 81-year-old man injured in a Nov. 5 head-on collision on Jarret White Road in Moanalua died Sunday night at The Queen's Medical Center.
The medical examiner's office identified the man as Milton Suzukawa of Kane'ohe. It is the 61st traffic fatality of the year on O'ahu.
Police, meanwhile, said speed and alcohol appear to be contributing factors in a 1:20 a.m. crash yesterday in 'Ewa that left a 19-year-old man in critical condition at Queen's.
The man was a passenger in a 1997 Ford pickup truck that crashed into a tree in the center medial of Renton Road near Tenney Road. A 23-year-old man who was driving the truck is listed in guarded condition at Queen's.
In an earlier collision on the H-1 Freeway near the Waipahu Street overpass, a 26-year-old Kapolei man suffered a dislocated wrist and arm injuries when his pickup truck was sideswiped by a sedan Sunday at 4:49 p.m. The car's driver fled the scene on foot.
Police enforce seat-belt violations
Police around the state yesterday began enforcing the "Click It Or Ticket" seat-belt citation program, which continues until Dec. 1.
State law requires drivers, front-seat passengers and back-seat passengers under the age of 18 to buckle up.
Honolulu police officers yesterday were at the intersection of Beretania and Isenberg streets in Mo'ili'ili writing up seat-belt citations.
Police officers issued 4,734 citations for seat-belt violations during the first "Click It or Ticket" campaign last summer. Another 169 citations were issued during that period for failure to use child safety seats.
Public warned of scam on Big Island
Big Island police are warning the public about a possible telemarketing scam.
The caller claims to represent the Hawai'i County Police Department in soliciting monetary donations from local businesses to help fund bulletproof vests for Hawai'i County police officers, police said.
Local Kailua-Kona business establishments have reported receiving calls from an unidentified male caller.
Acting Police Chief Lawrence Mahuna said the Hawai'i County Police Department does not solicit private donations for official use.
Anyone with information about the telephone solicitations is asked to call the Kona police at 326-4646 or the police non-emergency number at 935-3311.
Man charged in credit card theft
Police charged a 38-year-old man on Sunday for allegedly stealing the credit card of a tourist staying at a Waikiki hotel. Russell John Teramae, who has no local address, is being held in lieu of $35,000 bail for credit card theft, third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug and possession of drug paraphernalia.
A 33-year-old woman, who is a second suspect in the early Saturday theft, was at large, police said.
Police arrest man in bank robbery
A 34-year-old man was arrested on Halekauwila Street yesterday afternoon after being identified as the man who robbed a bank minutes earlier on North King Street.
Police said a man walked into the Hawai'i National Bank at 45 North King Street at about 3 p.m. and gave a teller a note demanding money. After the teller handed over some cash, the man fled.
Kalihi man accused of assaulting wife
Police charged a 25-year-old Kalihi man on Saturday for allegedly striking his wife in the face during a domestic argument.
The woman suffered a broken nose, police said. Paulo Tilia was charged with two counts of second-degree assault. He is being held in lieu of $20,000 bail.
