Pearl City boys volleyball coach Shigemasa to resign

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Pearl City High School boys volleyball coach Reid Shigemasa, who guided the Chargers to a surprise spot in the state championship match last weekend, said he will step down from his position.

Shigemasa said he will pursue a master's degree and has a wedding planned for early next year.

"It's time to move on to other things," said Shigemasa, who was Pearl City's coach for nine years.

The Chargers scored the biggest upset of the state tournament last Friday when they knocked off Interscholastic League of Honolulu runner-up Iolani, 15-8, 11-15, 15-5. Iolani had been heavily favored to meet ILH champ Kamehameha in the finals.

Kamehameha defeated Pearl City, 15-10, 15-9, on Saturday to win its second straight title. It was the 24th straight time an ILH team won the state title.

Shop and Score: Shoppers can help school athletic departments raise money for uniforms and equipment by purchasing Kraft, Nabisco, Meadow Gold and VIVA products at Times Super Markets with their Times Royal Card through Dec. 3.

The 2002 Shop and Score program, sponsored by those companies and Hawai'i Sports Network, will help schools earn a percentage of the total $40,000 purse that is redeemable for adidas and Wilson athletic gear and apparel.

Shoppers buying products with the above-mentioned labels should let the cashier know their intention to support the program, and the cashier will enter the code linking a participating school with the shopper's Royal Card. Once the card is registered, it will automatically credit points to the designated school whenever those products are purchased through Dec. 3.

The products include A1 Steak Sauce, Post cereals and JELL-O.

Participating schools include 'Aiea, Anuenue, ASSETS, Campbell, Castle, Christian Academy, Farrington, Hanalani, Kailua, Kaimuki, Kaiser, Kalaheo, Kalani, Kapolei, La Pietra, Lanakila Baptist, Leilehua, Lutheran, McKinley, Mid-Pacific, Mililani, Moanalua, Nanakuli, Pearl City, Punahou, Radford, Sacred Hearts, St. Andrew's Priory, St. Francis, University, Varsity, Wai'anae, Waipahu and Waialua.
