Triple Crown may resume today if surf rises as expected

The Vans Triple Crown of Surfing is expected to run again today at Hale'iwa Ali'i Beach, with wave faces expected to be around 10 feet.

The event was postponed for the third consecutive day yesterday due to insufficient conditions.

The men's Vans Hawaiian Pro and women's Roxy Pro could both run heats today. The men's contest is in the third round; the women's contest is in the second round.

Both contests are the first of three in the respective Triple Crown of Surfing series for men and women.

GOLF

• Veriato trails: Hilo's Steve Veriato shot a 4-over 76 in the first round of the Champions Tour Qualifying Tournament at the World Woods Golf Club in Homassassa Springs, Fla., yesterday.

Des Smyth and David Eger shot 67s for a 1-stroke lead.

After Friday's final round, eight players will receive full playing privileges for the Champions Tour.


FUND-RAISER

• Jackson benefit: "A Tailgate for Nate," a fund-raising event for former University of Hawai'i football player Nate Jackson, is tomorrow from 5:30-9 p.m. on Merchant Street in front of Murphy's Bar & Grill.

Ukulele artist Jake Shimabukuro will headline the event for Jackson, who is undergoing heart surgery due to a viral infection.

Tickets are $50, with all proceeds going directly towards medical expenses. For details, call 531-0422.
