Highway work getting started
Long-awaited safety and beautification improvements to Farrington Highway in Waipahu will begin with a groundbreaking ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 27 in front of Waipahu High School.
The work will take place from Waipahu High to Kunia Road and include new curbs and gutters, extended left-turn lanes, new trees and ground cover, and an irrigation system.
"The residents of Waipahu have been waiting patiently for these improvements for at least 15 years," said state Sen. Cal Kawamoto, D-18th (Waipahu, Pearl City).
The state Department of Transportation is overseeing the $4.8 million project, which is expected to take about 20 months to complete.
The work is also designed to curb jaywalking.
"We hope that the features we install will encourage pedestrians to use the crosswalks at the signaled intersections," Kawamoto said.
