HPU landscape chief honored

Joseph Saguto, director of roads and grounds at Hawai'i Pacific University, received an honorary award from the Kaulunani Urban Forestry Program in acknowledgement of his 30-plus years of landscaping the Windward Hawai'i Loa campus.

Saguto was given the Kane Riccio Honorary Award at a recent conference sponsored by several organizations, including the American Society of Landscape Architects, Hawai'i chapter, the County of Maui and the Outdoor Circle.

"It's pretty incredible what Joe has done to the campus. He went way beyond the call of duty and devoted his life to really making the Windward Hawai'i Loa campus ground a beautiful one," said Teresa Trueman-Madriaga, administrator of the Kaulunani program. "For generations to come, people will be able to appreciate the campus' natural beauty."

The award is named after Kane Riccio, considered the "first lady of the forest" by the Division of Forestry and Wildlife. Saguto is the second person to receive this recognition. Since it began in 1992, the program has awarded grants totaling more than $800,000 to more than 160 groups throughout the state.
