Jungle mania at Club Mist

Dieselboy, a Philly native born Damian Higgins, will bring his brand of jungle music to our shores at a concert from 9 p.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Sunday at the newly-opened Club Mist on 1946 King St. (near the corner of King and McCully streets).

"My style is up front," Higgins said via telephone from Sacramento. He was en route to a concert in Los Angeles. The DJ said concert-goers can expect "unreleased, fresh, new and futuristic drum-n-bass."

Dieselboy will be joined by special guests Thee-O of BioHazard, LA, and MC J-Messinian. Admission for the all-ages event is $10, $15 or $20. 591-3500.


Jazzed and ready

To some, nothing could be finer than jazz and sweets, both of which will be in abundance at Sunset Jazz Etc., 5-7 p.m. Sunday at La Pietra-Hawai'i School for Girls.

Hula drama at Kamehameha Schools

Through both traditional and modern chants and hula, students of Kanu o ka 'Aina New Century Public Charter School will explore the responsibilities of young Hawaiians in the 21st century in "Kuleana" at 7 p.m. today at Ke'elikolani Auditorium, Kamehameha Schools.

The hula drama, performed by 40 students in grades 2 through 12 from the charter school in Waimea, Big Island, is based on a year of student research into Hawaiians' relationships to the land, sea, fresh water, spiritual world and traditions of the kupuna, said the school's executive director, Ku Kahakalau.

Tickets are $10 for kupuna ages 60 and older and students in kindergarten through grade 12; $15 general. For sanity's sake

Imagine one actor portraying more than a dozen characters in a play about insanity. Enticed? Then see "Animal's Perspective Kingdom: Confessions in a Straight-Jacket ... ," 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1 and 2 at Kumu Kahua Theatre.

The production, part of the theater's Dark Night Series, is a world premiere one-man show written by, directed by and starring Jason Christopher Bishop. "It's about the fine line between sanity and insanity," Bishop said.

The show revolves around a rehabilitation program that allows mental patients to ease back into the general population by telling stories to their "sane" peers in the local community. Audience members will be thrust into the lives of colorful characters, all ranging from questionably to undeniably insane. Tickets are $5. Reservations: 536-4441.


Dancing with emotions

Human emotions and physical interactions will be explored in "Interplay," a concert of new dances presented by University of Hawai'i-Manoa's Department of Theater and Dance, 7:30 and 9 p.m. Saturday at the UH temporary dance building (on Lower Campus Road across the tennis courts).

The concert includes choreography and performances by UH students and alumni guests, including Esther Izuo, Jenny Butler, Helen Lee, Malia Yamamoto and Ben Arcangel. Admission is a $5 donation at the door; proceeds will benefit Friends of Dance at Manoa, which supports student scholarships and student travel to dance festivals and academic conferences. 956-3264.


Block party launches turkey weekend

The university area will be jumping once again as the Bud Block IV party of music, bar-hopping and good times gets under way Wednesday night. Among the bands taking part in the blowout will be B.E.T. (that's JD — Joe Daniels above); Da Hobrahs, Hellbound Hounds, Ho'onu'a, Linus, Kohomua with guest Kela from Ekolu, Missing Dave, Natural Vibes, Sudden Rush, Ten Feet, Three Plus, Typical Hawaiians and Suni Apuakeahu, who's launching a new CD.
