Man missing at Big Island park

A man who jumped into the ocean from a cliff at MacKenzie State Park on the Big Island about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday disappeared after swimming a few strokes and then going limp, witnesses told fire investigators.

Big Island firefighters, backed up with an engine, medic unit, rescue boat and helicopter, searched for the man along with a United States Coast Guard HH-65 helicopter but found no sign of him, the Fire Department said Wednesday night.

"Witnesses said (the man) stated he wanted to swim, and entered the ocean by jumping off a cliff," Fire Capt. D. Wela of the Pahoa Station said.

The man was described as Caucasian, about 25 years old. He was not identified.

Robber targets bank in Kaimuki

The Kaimuki branch of Territorial Savings & Loan Association at 1108 12th Ave. was robbed yesterday of an undisclosed amount of cash by a man who handed a teller a note demanding money.

The robber ran away and remains at large.

Suspect arrested in Puna shooting

Big Island police arrested a 55-year-old man in connection with a fatal shooting early yesterday in Puna. The Kapoho-area incident was reported at 4 a.m.

The male victim, a neighbor of the suspect, was shot several times in the chest, police said.

They were notified by the wife of the suspect, who surrendered to police without incident.

Disabled man missing on Kaua'i

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — A mentally disabled man walked away from his caretaker at Po'ipu Beach Park Wednesday afternoon and has been reported missing.

Police are asking for public help in locating John Harrington, 55, 5 feet 10 and 165 pounds, with a fair complexion and short gray hair.

Unconfirmed reports placed him near the Hyatt hotel and adjacent Maha'ulepu area Wednesday afternoon.
