Pearl City Pee Wee team wins, heads to nationals

Advertiser Staff

The Pearl City Highland Colts Pop Warner Pee Wee football team (ages 9-12) defeated the Wai'anae Tigers, 20-6, last Sunday in the Mele Kalikimaka Bowl played at Aloha Stadium.

Pearl City completed an unbeaten season (10-0) and will represent Hawai'i at the National Championship in Orlando, Fla. Those games will be played Dec. 8-14.

In the semifinals at Kailua, Pearl City defeated Kailua, 14-8.

There are four divisions in Pop Warner football: Junior Pee Wee (ages 8-11, 55-95 pounds), Pee Wee (9-12, 70-110), Junior Midgets (10-13, 80-120) and Midgets (11-14, 95-145).

Hawai'i competes in all, but the Junior Midget division.

Only one division from Hawai'i is picked to go to the nationals, according to Pearl City head coach Robin Kami.

Next year, a team from the Junior Pee Wee will represent Hawai'i.

Pearl City will be one of eight teams in the Pee Wee Division.

Kami's team includes 30 players and nine staff members.

"They're good kids, work real hard together as a team," said Kami, who said he has coached semi-pro football in Hawai'i.

The difference?

"The kids listen. They pay more attention to the details."

The Colts will hold a car wash and other fundraisers to help defray travel costs. Donations can be made payable to the Pearl City Highland Colts. For more information, contact William Supebedia at 677-9995.
