The University of Hawai'i baseball team yesterday announced the signing of 12 players, including three from Hawai'i, for the 2004 season.
"We had the No. 19 recruiting class in the country last season and if everyone were to show up out of this class, it would be even better," said UH coach Mike Trapasso. "There are two or three high-profile guys in this class that will probably be drafted high in June. But you have to take that risk."
Trapasso credited assistants Chad Konishi, Brian Green and Keith Komeiji for helping land the recruits.
The 2004 class includes Kaua'i High grad Mark Rodrigues, a left-handed pitcher who will transfer from Los Medanos College, and current prep players Kaimi Mead of Roosevelt and Jonathon Serapion of Pearl City. Mead, also a left-handed pitcher, played three seasons for St. Louis before transferring to Roosevelt. Serapion is a right-handed pitcher.
The other signees are:
Brandon Bailey Outfielder at Sacramento Community College. As a high school senior he batted .598 with seven home runs and 45 RBIs, and was named Player of the Year by the Sacramento Bee newspaper.
Stephen Bryant Right-handed pitcher at Feather River Community College. He struck out 21 in 30¡ innings last season.
Matthew Buck Left-handed pitcher at Cactus Shadows High in Cave Creek, Ariz.
Andrew Castillo Infielder at Cerritos Community College.
Travis Denker Infielder at Brea Olinda High in Fullerton, Calif. He earned all-state honors last season after batting .448 with 13 home runs and 35 RBIs.

Evan MacLane Left-handed pitcher at Feather River Community College. He was named to all-Northern California JC team after compiling a 13-2 record and 2.21 ERA.
Jeffrey Pry Right-handed pitcher at Franklin High in Portland, Ore. whom Trapasso expects to be a high draft choice next year.
