Thumb and knee injuries could sideline Chang

It's not just the knee, but also the thumb that could prevent University of Hawai'i quarterback Tim Chang from playing in Saturday's nationally televised game against Alabama.

UH coach June Jones said today that Chang has a sprained right thumb on his throwing hand and that injury would keep Chang out of practice until at least Thursday. Jones was not certain that Chang would be able to practice at all.

Chang already has a slightly torn medical collateral ligament in his left knee.

Jones believes both injuries occurred when Chang tried to sneak for a touchdown in Saturday's 20-19 victory over Cincinnati.

Chang did not participate in the football team's conditioning drills this morning, and he said he would not know if he will be available to play in Saturday's game until he gets "on the field to practice."

Chang's knee injury was aggravated when Cincinnati linebacker Tyjuan Hagler lunged into Chang's left knee during UH's final possession.

X-rays on Saturday night and a magnetic resonance imaging yesterday did not show any significant damage.

UH officials listed Chang's availability as "questionable," meaning he has a 50-percent chance of playing against Alabama.

Chang wasn't sure of his status this morning, as he limped noticeably en route to the UH training room for medical treatment. He wore a large brace on his left knee.

"We'll see how it goes this week," Chang said.

While his teammates ran sprints this morning, Chang watched on the side. He then returned to the training room for more treatment.
