Officials warn of high surf

The National Weather Service forecast surf rising to 25 to 30 feet through tonight on northwest-facing shores on O'ahu and Kaua'i.

The surf is expected to remain in this range through tomorrow morning, prompting a high-surf warning by the weather service this morning for both islands. It is expected to last all day.

The surf heights in the weather service forecast are being measured by the face of the wave, which is generally twice as large as traditional Hawai'i-style estimates.

The waves are still dangerous and can produce hazardous rip currents, the weather service said.

O'ahu Civil Defense Acting Administrator Doug Aton said volunteers would monitor beaches along the Leeward Coast and the North Shore. No trouble was reported this morning, he said.

North shore lifeguards yesterday, however, rescued three scuba divers who got in trouble when a strong, surf-related rip tide sucked them out to sea at Sharks Cove about 5:30 p.m., said lifeguard Lt. John Hoogsteden.

Driver charged in alleged threat

Police yesterday charged a 26-year-old man with first-degree terroristic threatening stemming from an alleged road rage incident early Saturday morning on Farrington Highway near Leoku Street in Waipahu.

Reno Oasay was released last night after posting $11,000 bail.

A man, 33, told police he was driving on the on-ramp from Kunia Road to Farrington Highway at 11:55 p.m. Friday when Oasay overtook him from the right shoulder.

The two motorists were at a stop near Leoku Street when Oasay got out of his car with a baseball bat and allegedly made threatening gestures to the complainant. Oasay was arrested nearby by a patrol officer.

Teen arrested in stabbing

A 17-year-old Nanakuli resident was arrested early Saturday morning on suspicion of stabbing a man during an argument that allegedly started when he was challenged to a fight by the victim.

According to police, the teen was walking home on Hakimo Road at 2:05 a.m. when the man, 35, challenged him to fight. The situation escalated, and the boy is accused of grabbing a knife from his home and stabbing the man in the arm. At the time, the victim allegedly was going after one of the teen's relatives.

The case is being investigated as an attempted second-degree murder.

2 water mains under repair

Board of Water Supply repair crews were working on broken water mains today in Waikiki and Ma'ili.

The two breaks did not cause any major traffic problems.

Repair crews expected to have the 12-inch main break on Ala Wai and Seaside Ave. repaired by noon. Two left lanes on Ala Wai and one lane on Seaside were closed to traffic at 4:41 a.m.

The Ma'ili break at Maipalaoa Road and Ho'okele Street was reported at 3:48 a.m. and involved an 8-inch main. Work was expected to be completed by late afternoon.
