• Accessing the approximately 90 percent of recent census data not available in hard copy will be one focus of an upcoming two-part workshop on locating, understanding and using census figures on a day-to-day basis. The free workshop, "Accessing Census Data i A Step-to-Step" Process," is sponsored, in part, by the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism and the U.S. Census Bureau. It is aimed at businesses, nonprofit organizations and government agencies among others, and is designed to offer help in using the population survey to secure grants, conduct community analysis projects, develop market research studies, or analyze neighborhoods for delivery of social services, among other things. Speaking will be Jerry Wong, information specialist and 23-year-old census veteran with the Los Angeles Regional Office of the Census Bureau. Of special emphasis this year will be using the Internet to obtain Census 2000 data, much of which is unavailable in hard copy form. The workshops are co-sponsored by the Hawai'i Small Business Development Center. The two-part workshop will take place Dec. 11 in the No. 1 Capitol District Building, 250 S. TUESDAY

• Determining how much income will be needed at retirement — and how to structure retirement plan distributions to best suit one's situation — will be among the topics discussed at a free "Retiring Soon" seminar, 6 p.m., tomorrow, at Edward Jones offices at 320 Ward Ave., Suite 206. • The MINORITY BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER OF HONOLULU will offer free weekly orientation sessions to minority business owners and prospective entrepreneurs. The sessions, scheduled 9 to 10:30 a.m. every Tuesday in the center's offices in Suite 2506 of the Executive Center, 1088 Bishop St., will offer advice on business startup, marketing plans, loans, employee handbooks and access to capital. • A free COMPUTER BOOT CAMP is offered 3 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays to all small business owners interested in using computer technology to improve and expand business operations and management. The program is sponsored by the Small Business Resource Center, in partnership with the Small Business Administration, the city Office of Economic Development, Hawai'i Small Business Development Center Network, Hawai'i Women's Business Center, and SCORE. The program is open to all clients of the center who have attended a center orientation. Orientations are offered at 9 a.m. Tuesdays or 2 p.m. Thursdays at 1041 Nu'uanu Ave., (#A). • Retirement plans that work for small business owners will be the focus of an upcoming free seminar, sponsored by Edward Jones financial firm. • Former city and state employees are invited to learn more about new options for their 457 Deferred Compensation Plan distribution, at a FREE RETIREMENT WORKSHOP Saturday, sponsored by Edward Jones financial firm.
