Forest shots
Nathan Yuen gets to parts of the Islands many never see, hiking the mountain trails and kayaking to remote shoreline areas. And his day job as research administrator at The Queen's Medical Center has shown him how important the world of plant compounds and microorganisms can be to combating human disease. It is also his firm belief that "all living things have a right to exist." Out of this came a project designed to impress Islanders with the importance of biodiversity.
Yuen's "Year of the Hawaiian Forest 2003 Calendar" is on sale now at bookstores and the state Department of Land and Natural Resources. Pictures include a rare kolea lau li'i, found in a bog atop Mount Ka'ala, O'ahu's highest point.
A quarter of the profits from the calendar will go to a consortium of conservation groups. To learn more, visit hawaiianforest.com.
MTV takes up yoga
Hard as it may be to wrap your mind and legs around the idea, the channel that brought you "Jackass" is indeed attempting to cash in on the transcendental.
"MTV Yoga," hosted by Lori Trespecio of "The Real World" and yoga instructor Kristin McGee, offers a "a fast-paced, 53-minute workout inspired by the Vinyasa style of yoga with an MTV spin." Meditate on that.
