Tree lighting to honor pets

The Hawaiian Humane Society is having a tree lighting ceremony 6 to 7 p.m. Dec. 5 to honor pets, past and present.

Those who attend will chose from colored lights or ornaments that can be personalized and hung on the tree. The ornaments or lights can be retrieved from Jan. 6 through Jan. 17.

A donation of $5 per ornament or $1 per colored light is suggested.

The Humane Society is at 2700 Wai'alae Ave. in Mo'ili'ili. For more information, call 946-2187, ext. 217.

Classes set for false alarms

Homeowners with security systems that set off more than three false alarms each year may be charged a $50 for each subsequent false alarm that pulls officers off their beats.

The option to paying the charge is attending a class on security alarms at police headquarters on Alapa'i and Beretania streets.

Alarm systems are also required to be registered. The cost of registration is $15; annual renewals are $5. The ordinance went into effect earlier this year. Registration forms are available at police stations, public libraries, satellite city halls or at www.honolulupd.org.

Failing to register carries a $100 fine.

For more information, call HPD's Alarm Tracking Section at 532-8445 or 532-8446.

Man injured in forklift accident

A 39-year-old man was in critical condition last night at The Queen's Medical Center after being injured in a forklift accident yesterday at a piggery in Nanakuli.

Fire Capt. Kenison Tejada said the man was using a forklift to unload bins filled with 200 to 300 pounds of slop at a piggery near Pa'akea and Hakimo roads.

He somehow fell from the lift and was lying on the ground between the slop bin and the pigpen shortly before 1:30 p.m., when firefighters were called to the scene.

The man had head injuries, Tejada said. Emergency Medical Services workers took him to Wai'anae Coast Comprehensive Health Center. He was later flown by military helicopter to Queen's.

While officers were investigating that incident, the girl told them she had been inappropriately touched and sexually assaulted. Authorities took her to Kapi'olani Medical Center for an examination.

A 39-year-old man was arrested Friday evening.

Barriers put at Makalapa Gate

Construction began last week at Makalapa Gate at Pearl Harbor to install new anti-terrorism hydraulic barriers. The work is expected to last until Dec. 6.

When that project is completed, work will begin to install the new barriers at Nimitz Gate.

The barrier construction requires partial lane closures, the Navy said.
