Chaminade loses 29th straight Maui game

Associated Press

LAHAINA Freshman Ike Diogu scored 19 points and Arizona State held Chaminade to two points over the final eight minutes of the first half in a 101-72 victory today in the consolation round of the Maui Invitational.

The Sun Devils (2-1) will play for fifth place tomorrow against Massachusetts or Utah.

Arizona State closed the first half with a 25-2 run, including a 15-0 burst, to lead 56-22.

Chaminade (0-3) had one field goal over the last eight minutes of the half and its only points were two free throws by Jason Walters with 4:01 left that made it 41-22.

Jamal Hill added 17 points for Arizona State, which shot 63 percent from the field (38-for-60), while Shawn Redhage had 13 and Tommy Smith and Kyle Dodd each had 12.

Leon Ballard and Jerry Wells each had 15 points for the Silverwords, who lost their 29th straight game in the tournament it hosts. Chaminade, a Division II school, is 3-51 in the Maui Invitational. Its last win was in double overtime over Stanford in the seventh-place game in 1992.

Arizona State played the first three games of the season without senior guard Curtis Millage, the leading returning scorer from last season. He was kept out of the game over questions regarding academic eligibility. The school was told today he is eligible and he was expected to join the team for tomorrow's game.

No. 15 Kentucky 82, ASU 65

Kentucky is going to need Keith Bogans to bounce back from a disappointing junior year. He got his senior season off to a nice start.

Bogans scored 20 points and No. 15 Kentucky opened its 100th season of basketball with an 82-65 victory over Arizona State last night in the first round of the Maui Invitational.

Bogans finished 7-for-10 from the field, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range, and had a team-leading seven rebounds and four assists for the Wildcats (1-0), who opened a 20-point lead in the first half and were up 43-30 after shooting 53 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes.

"I wasn't putting everything on getting off to a good start but I came out and played a good game like I want to every game," said Bogans, whose scoring average dropped from 17.0 as a sophomore to 11.6 last season.

"It was one of Keith's better all-around games. He's an All-American and we expect him to do that every night," said Kentucky coach Tubby Smith.

Jamal Hill had 16 points, all but four in the first half to lead Arizona State (1-1).

No. 19 Indiana 84, Umass 71

Mike Davis was disappointed in what people were expecting out of his Indiana team coming off the loss to Maryland in last season's national championship game.

"Too low, too low," he said of his team's preseason rankings following yesterday's 84-71 victory over Massachusetts in the opening round of the Maui Invitational.

Judging by the way the 19th-ranked Hoosiers looked for most of their season opener, he may be right.

Tom Coverdale scored 20 points and George Leach added career highs of 19 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Hoosiers (1-0), who were playing for the first time since that loss in Atlanta.

Despite the loss of Big Ten player of the year Jared Jeffries, they looked like they hadn't missed a beat except for some shooting woes over the final eight minutes.

"I told the team I didn't agree with all the people who do the polls and I told them the only way to prove them wrong is to win and win big," Davis said.

The 13-point win advanced Indiana to today's semifinals against No. 20 Gonzaga, which beat Utah 71-52.

The Hoosiers set a school record with 270 3-pointers last season and they had nine in the first half in taking a 50-40 lead over the Minutemen (0-1).

Leach, a 6-foot-11 senior, was dominant inside for Indiana.

"If he plays like that all year we'll be a really good team," Coverdale said of Leach, who averaged 2.8 points and 2.5 rebounds last season. "If we get half the production from him we did today we'll be really good."

Raheim Lamb had 17 points and 12 rebounds for Massachusetts, while Marcus Cox, a transfer from Connecticut, had 14 points.
