High surf that closed Waimea Bay yesterday afternoon is expected to continue into today, followed by more typical seasonal surf for the Thanksgiving holiday and into the weekend, the National Weather Service said.
Giant surf of up to 25 to 30 feet pounded the North Shore, creating what forecasters called "an extremely dangerous scenario of heavy breakers, rips and surging runoffs up into normally dry zones."
Sunset Beach firefighters said there were reports of water crossing roadways, but no emergencies.
O'ahu Civil Defense closed Waimea Bay, where waves up to 30 feet were reported. Lifeguards warned beachgoers away from the water, but reported no rescue calls.
"No Swimming" signs were posted at all North Shore beaches, while lifeguards at Leeward O'ahu beaches reported no problems.
A high surf warning was posted for all northwest facing shores yesterday, in anticipation of 20- to 30-foot waves and occasional higher sets on Kaua'i and O'ahu.
Maui could expect 15 to 25 feet, and the Big Island 12 feet, forecasters said.
A high surf advisory was posted for west-facing shores.
