Three hurt after car plunges off cliff

A woman and two children were injured last night when a car they were in plunged off a 100-foot cliff near the Big Island community of Pu'uanahulu and flipped several times before it came to rest with the woman seriously hurt and trapped inside.

Fire crews responded and were able to extricate the woman. The Fire Department helicopter flew the 50-year-old driver, a 15-year-old girl and a 5-year-old boy to North Hawaii Hospital.

The crash occurred at about 7 p.m. near Pu'uanahulu at one of the sharp turns in the mountain highway about halfway between Waimea and Kona, fire officials said.


Kaua'i police still looking for man

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — The search continued yesterday for a 55-year-old mentally disabled man who has been missing for nearly a week.

John Harrington was last seen around 3:30 p.m. last Wednesday at Po'ipu Beach Park, according to Kaua'i police. After eating lunch with his caretaker, Harrington went for a walk and did not return. He reportedly was spotted at the Hyatt Regency's pool and at the CJM Stable properties.

Harrington is 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighs 165 pounds. He has a fair complexion and short gray hair, and was last seen wearing faded cut-off jean shorts, a faded green T-shirt, a dark blue baseball cap with "Harrington Properties" printed on it, and white sneakers.

Suspected hotel burglar caught

A 28-year-old Kaka'ako man who was seen scaling balconies between the 27th and 28th floors of a Waikiki hotel early yesterday was arrested by police on suspicion of breaking into a guest's room on the 28th floor.

Police captured the burglary suspect at 1:30 a.m. in a 27th-floor room at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort. The room was registered to a guest with whom the arrested man was staying, police said.


Bank robbery suspect nabbed

A woman with a note demanding money robbed First Hawaiian Bank's main branch at Bishop and King streets yesterday morning. Police arrested a suspect a short time later.

At 11:20 a.m. a woman went into the bank with a note demanding money, was given an undisclosed amount and ran away, a detective said.
