Four from Hawai'i named All-Region

Four volleyball players from Hawai'i were named to the All-Pacific Region first team for NCAA Division II, announced yesterday by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Earning first-team honors were PacWest Player of the Year Susy Garbelotti of Hawai'i Pacific and PacWest Freshman of the Year Chun Yi Lin and Yu Chuan Weng of BYUH. It was the second time Garbelotti has been selected to the All-Region Team. Kane'ohe's Kimberly Tano of Western New Mexico was also named to the first team.

Weng was selected as the region's Freshman of the Year.

BYUH's Kaala Lo earned All-Region honorable mention.

• BYUH rises to No. 3: The Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's volleyball team climbed three spots to No. 3 in the AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll released yesterday.

The Seasiders trail West Texas A&M, which is host to next week's NCAA Division II Elite Eight Tournament, and Northern Colorado in the poll.

BYUH will open the Elite Eight against No. 25 New Haven (Conn.) on Dec. 5.


GOLF

Amateurs win Burns Cup: The Professionals tied the Amateurs 6-6 in individual matches yesterday, but lost the John A. Burns Challenge Cup golf tournament at Mid-Pacific Country Club.

The Amateurs went into the final day with an 8.5-3.5 lead after the better ball and alternate shot competitions on Monday and finished with a 14 1/2-9 1/2 victory after individual match play yesterday.

Tommy Kim, Blaine Kimura, Del-Marc Fujita, Joe Phengsavath and Mark West won for the Amateurs yesterday.

Phil Chun, Beau Yokomoto, Ed Tischler, Regan Lee and Andrew Feldmann got wins for the Professionals.


SURFING

• Waves too big: Massive waves of 20 to 25 feet forced the postponement of the Rip Curl Cup yesterday at Sunset Beach.

The Rip Curl Cup is the second contest in the Triple Crown series.
