Hawai'i was running out of turkey stuffing ingredients on the eve of Thanksgiving yesterday.
Some supermarkets suggested Stove-Top or scratch for shoppers who drove from store to store in a desperate search for bread crumbs and croutons.
Foodland, watching a supply of Love's stuffing mix dwindle, and unable to get Holsum this Thanksgiving at all, began preparing stuffing mix in its bakeries for last-minute shoppers.
Safeway reported a small supply of mix left at its Beretania store, but said customers were flocking there after other stores ran out.
Times in Waipahu said it had run out, and offered Stove-Top in a box as an alternative.
Star Market in Kahala said shoppers cleaned out its supply of both Love's and Pepperidge Farms mix.
The reason for the shortage wasn't clear, and major suppliers couldn't be reached.
But grocery clerks said they'd heard explanations ranging from a big bakery oven breakdown to dockside delays of ingredients.
Others suggested that creditors' takeover this month of Hawaii Baking Co., which bakes Holsum and Oroweat brands here, caused the culinary crisis.
