STATEWIDE

Thanksgiving alert issued by HFD

The Honolulu Fire Department yesterday issued a Thanksgiving Day alert that "that billowing smoke you see rising from your neighbor's yard with the pungent smell of burning turkey may very well be by design, not an accident," Fire Capt. Richard Soo said.

As of midnight last night, 133 O'ahu residents had called the fire department to tell them in advance they were going to cook the bird in-ground today.

With the "imu registration" program in place, fire dispatchers can look at a list and see if the report is coming from an area where the traditional Hawaiian roasting pit is supposed to be in use.

EAST HONOLULU

Rumble strips to be removed

The rumble strips on Hawai'i Kai Drive near Maunanani Street that are creating noise that bothers residents of Kamehame Ridge will be removed.

At a meeting Tuesday, the Hawai'i Kai Neighborhood Board voted 9-3 in favor of having the city take out the strips, which were installed in September to slow traffic coming down the hill from Kalama Valley and points farther east.

The city was notified, and Cheryl Soon, Department of Transportation Services director, said the strips will be removed, though she did not say when.

The rumble strips were put in following complaints about unsafe conditions for pedestrians.

"These bumps are the fast way to remedy the situation," Soon said. "We believed that we were doing something the community wanted."

The city will go forward with moving the bus stop and painting a crosswalk to improve pedestrian safety, Soon said.

Kaua'i chorus to perform

The Kaua'i High School Chorus will present "Christmas is Light!" — a winter choral concert — Dec. 16 and 17 at the Kaua'i War Memorial Convention Hall in Lihu'e.

The program, which begins at 7 p.m. both days, will feature the high school chorus and Kaua'i High Singers. Also on the program are the school's 'ukulele band and the Koloa Elementary School Singers.

Advance tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for students and senior citizens. Tickets sold at the door will be $7 for adults, $5 for students and senior citizens. Children 11 years old and under will be admitted free.

Tickets are available from chorus students as well as Zack's in Lihu'e and Kapa'a, and Kahn Gallery in Koloa.

Proceeds will help chorus students travel to Honolulu to experience Hawaii Opera Theatre's production of "La Boheme" in February.

"Christmas Is Light!" is directed by David Conrad, assisted by Marly Madayag and Janice Ikeda.

Children to be honored at vigil

A candlelight vigil will be held at 6 p.m. Dec. 8 in the courtyard of La Pietra School for Girls in memory of Hawai'i children who have died.

The event, sponsored by The Compassionate Friends Honolulu chapter, is part of a worldwide memorial that begins in New Zealand and works its way around the globe.

The ceremony will feature live music including harp, flute and bagpipes, said chapter leader Charlotte Boyd.

"It's a special way for bereaved parents, siblings, relatives and family friends — as well as the general community — to remember our children," Boyd said.

Compassionate Friends is an international self-help support group for families following the death of a child. It has more than 500 chapters in the United States alone.

La Pietra is at 2933 Poni Moi Road near Kapi'olani Park.
