HILO, Hawai'i Two escape charges have been filed against an inmate who fled from Hale Nani Correctional Center on Sunday.
The second charge was filed after Douglas Cordeiro, 21, tried but failed to escape from police custody since his arrest Wednesday, according to police.
Police said an anonymous tip led a South Hilo officer to stop Cordeiro as he drove along Nene Street, police said. Cordeiro was arrested for driving without a license after he gave a false identification, police said.
Cordeiro's true identity was learned when he was taken to the police station. While at the station, he tried to escape, but was caught at the police complex, police said.
Cordeiro also was charged with driving without a license. He was being held in lieu of $4,000 bail.
