Hawai'i 'Nutcracker' making Maui debut

It premiered last year at the Hawai'i Theater, and now Honolulu Dance Theatre's "King Kalakaua's Nutcracker Ballet" takes a bow on Maui.

The ballet, a Hawaiian adaptation of Tschaikovsky's "The Nutcracker," is set in the reign of Kalakaua at 'Iolani Palace, with a young Princess Ka'iulani in the traditional Clara role.

Among the sights and sounds are colorful dancing 'ukulele, pineapple and menehune.

Show times are 2 and 7:30 p.m. today and 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center. $10, $18 and $28, half price for children 12 and younger. (808) 242-7469.
