Candidates for governor have adjusted their schedules and their tactics this week after the death of U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink.

Democratic nominee Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono is scaling down her campaign through Friday out of respect for Mink, her campaign said.

Hirono's campaign has cancelled sign waving, canvassing and some rallies that were planned for this week, said campaign spokeswoman Barbara Tanabe. Tanabe said Hirono also planned to cancel all television advertising this week but will have limited TV spots "because the Mink family felt the campaign should go on."

Republican nominee Linda Lingle pulled all television and radio ads on Saturday and Sunday out of respect for Mink, said Lingle campaign communications director Lenny Klompus, but advertising is resuming this week.

Lingle and Hirono are still scheduled to participate in a forum today at noon, sponsored by the AARP. The forum is being held in the Coral Ballroom at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. To reserve a seat, call 545-6008.
