Airport gets fed screeners
Federal screeners will begin a phased-in takeover of security at Honolulu International Airport today, assuming control of one passenger checkpoint as part of the security upgrade ordered at the nation's airports following the 9/11 attacks.
Additional checkpoints will be added as people are trained, officials said.
The new screeners will operate under the federal Transportation Security Administration, which is establishing security operations in the nation's commercial airports under mandates of the Aviation and Transportation Security Act of 2001.
Formerly, security at Honolulu International was handled by Wackenhut Corp., a private firm.
Nu'uanu OK'd for movie scene
The state Board of Land and Natural Resources has approved the use, subject to stringent conditions, of Kapena Falls in Nu'uanu for a scene in the feature film "Helldorado," starring The Rock.
The board will allow Universal Studios to flip a stripped-down Jeep off a rock outcropping next to Kapena Falls into the pool below in mid-October.
The Jeep will be steam-cleaned, have no engine, transmission or glass and will be removed from the pool by helicopter to avoid damage to the surrounding area.
Conditions include:
- The Jeep access ramp must be constructed to minimize impact to the area.
- A conservation enforcement officer will monitor the procedure.
- The area must be left in the same or better condition than the company found it.
- The film company will clean the walls of Nu'uanu Pali lookout and paint over recent graffiti.
