Rainbows remain No. 2 in volleyball poll

The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team remained No. 2 in the USA Today/AVCA Division I coaches top 25 poll, released yesterday.

The Rainbow Wahine, who are 11-0, accumulated 1,553 points and nine first-place votes, and trail Southern Cal, which had 1,611 points and 55 first-place votes.

The top five teams remained the same with Florida at No. 3, followed by Stanford and Nebraska.

Western Athletic Conference members Nevada and Fresno State were unranked, but received points and were listed on two or more ballots.

Hawai'i will next play Louisiana Tech in a WAC match Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

GOLF

Turtle Bay qualifying: Four Mainland pros qualified for the Turtle Bay Championship yesterday at the Turtle Bay Resort Palmer Course.

Patrick Laverty (69) of Las Vegas, Roy Vucinich (70) of Coraopolis, Pa., John Calabria (70) of Naples, Fla., and Rick Massengale (71) of Flower Mound, Texas, yesterday qualified for the event, which starts Friday.

Defending champion Hale Irwin will head a 78-player field.

FOOTBALL

QB Gesser honored: Playing with a dislocated rib, Washington State quarterback Jason Gesser threw for 431 yards and four touchdowns to earn USATODAY.com Player of the Week honors.

The senior signal caller completed 28 of 44 passes, including scoring strikes of 11, 10, 31 and 6 yards, as the 18th-ranked Cougars came from behind to defeat California, 48-38.

"(Rib injuries) are a pretty hard thing because you can't do anything," he said. "It's just there and you've got to let time heal it. And then when you sneeze, oh, that's the worst when you sneeze or anything like that. You know what's coming and you know a sharp pain is going to be jabbing you right there in your chest."
