Academy director to get arts award

George Ellis, outgoing director of the Honolulu Academy of Arts, will receive the 2002 Alfred Preis Award for lifelong commitment to the arts and arts education at "Celebrate the ARTS! Alliance Awards 2002," 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Hawai'i Theatre.
Preis, an architect, helped found the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and the Hawai'i Alliance for Arts Education.
Jane Campbell, retired Honolulu Theatre for Youth executive director, will receive special recognition.
Arts Excellence Awards will be given to middle schools Halau Ku Mana, King Kalakaua, Kawananakoa, Clearview Christian Girls School (Maui), Iolani School, Maryknoll and Mid-Pacific Institute.
Tickets are $25 and $35 general; $15 for Hawai'i Alliance for Arts Education members; $5 for children. 528-0506.
Opera will launch single ticket sales
Single ticket sales begin Monday for the Hawai'i Opera Theatre's 2003 season, which starts in January. Three productions are on tap at Blaisdell Concert Hall: "Eugene Onegin," Jan. 31, Feb. 2 and 4; "The Magic Flute," Feb. 14, 16 and 18; and "La Bohéme," Feb. 28, March 2, 4 and 6.
Tickets $95-$27, are on sale at the HOT box office, 985 Waimanu St., 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. Information: 596-7858.
