HONOLULU

Oil transport firm charged

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency filed a complaint Monday against a Hawai'i company about violations discovered two years ago during an inspection, officials said.

The EPA said Honolulu-based West Coast Cleaning and Preservation improperly stored and managed used oil at its transfer facility in Honolulu. The company had no not comment.


State roadwork to close lanes

These traffic lanes will be closed this week:

• Near Castle Junction on Pali Highway, the right lane Kailua-bound and the left-turn lane on Kamehameha Highway will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Friday for installation of new telephone duct lines.

• In East Honolulu, Kalaniana'ole Highway kokohead-bound will be closed between 'Ainakoa Avenue and West Hind Drive from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Friday for pavement striping and guard-rail installation.

• In 'Aiea, two right lanes of H-1 Freeway westbound will be closed from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. through tomorrow for a survey.

• On Likelike Highway in Kalihi, a Honolulu-bound lane will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. between Valley View Drive and Kula Kolea Drive to build a retaining wall. A Kane'ohe-bound lane on Likelike will be closed 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. from Nalanieha Street to Valley View Drive for a survey.

Kailua board seeks members

The Kailua Neighborhood Board will attempt to fill two vacancies at its meeting, 7 p.m. today at the Kailua District Park Multi-purpose Room, 21 S. Kainalu Drive.

Seats to be filled represent Sub District 2 (Enchanted Lake, Keolu Hills) and Sub District 3 (Olomana, Pohakupu, Maunawili).

Interested candidates must be present to be nominated and will have three minutes to address the board. A vote will be taken and the winners sworn in.


NEIGHBOR ISLANDS

Disabled forum calls candidates

The Kaua'i Center for Independent Living will hold a candidate forum from 9:30 a.m. to noon tomorrow at the Aloha Beach Resort next to Lydgate Park.

The forum will seek candidates' views on issues involving people with disabilities.

ELECTION 2002

Candidates debate tonight

Democratic incumbent Michael Kahikina and Republican challenger Karen Awana, candidates for House District 44 (Nanakuli, Honokai Hale), will participate in a live TV debate tonight as part of the "Vote! 2002: Candidates Debate" series sponsored by 'Olelo Community Television.

The debate will aiar from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Oceanic Channel 54 and Oceanic Digital Control.
