One open date to be filled

The University of Hawai'i is talking to Alabama, Michigan, Michigan State, Navy and Wyoming about filling the final opening on next year's football schedule and completing two future ones, athletic director Herman Frazier said.

Frazier said head coach June Jones is all for, "playing some really quality opponents out of conference."

Frazier said he hopes to secure one commitment in the coming weeks to plug the spot for 2003 left by Virginia's withdrawal. UH's other non-conference home games in 2003 include Army and Akron.

UH plays 25th-ranked Alabama next month at Aloha Stadium, a deal that was made after the Crimson Tide were handed a two-year ban on postseason appearances by the NCAA because of illegal booster influence. Alabama sought to use a trip here as its unofficial "bowl" game.

Alabama had hoped to have the sentence cut in half on appeal but last month the NCAA reaffirmed the ban through 2003. Frazier said he expects to know before the Tide's Nov. 30 visit if the deal can be extended to next season.

FRAZIER
Frazier said Washington is interested in playing UH in 2003, but the Huskies only want a game in Seattle. "Any other year," Frazier said UH would be interested in going to Husky Stadium where the Rainbows scored a 10-7 upset in their last appearance, in 1973. But the Warriors are already contracted for six road games on a 13-game schedule next season and financially could not afford to give up a home date that might net as much as $500,000.

UH has four Western Athletic Conference road games plus non-conference trips to Southern Cal and Nevada-Las Vegas already booked.

The Warriors are also attempting to fill one date each on their 2004 and 2005 schedules and need four opponents for 2006, Frazier said.

The 2004 non-conference schedule already has Sacramento State, Idaho and Northwestern while 2005 includes Eastern Washington, Wisconsin and San Diego State.
