SURFING

Irons, Robb advance: Hawai'i surfers Andy Irons and Kalani Robb won their first-round heats in the Quiksilver Pro France yesterday in 1- to 3-foot waves at Hossegor, France.

Irons, who is currently ranked No. 1 on surfing's World Championship Tour, received scores of 8.0 and 7.7 on his two best waves. His 7.7 ride came on his final wave of the heat, and allowed him to edge Australian Nathan Hedge.

Robb was one of the top performers of the first round, recording scores of 8.5 and 8.25 for his best two waves.

With their victories, Irons and Robb advanced directly to the third round.

Shane Dorian of Kailua, Kona, placed third in his opening heat, and will next surf in the second round.
