TIP-OFF
John Prine to play Hawai'i Theatre Oct. 19

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Entertainment Writer

John Prine, Grammy Award-winning singer, composer and guitarist, will bring his country, folk and blues tunes to O'ahu in a concert at 8 p.m. Oct. 19 at the Hawaii Theatre.

A cult favorite on the recording and concert circuit for three decades, Prine is an Illinois-born artist who has a Nashville twang and a cadre of duets with a host of country folk, including Trisha Yearwood, Melba Montgomery, Emmylou Harris, Connie Smith, Patty Loveless.

Prine's "Bruised Orange," produced by his collaborator Steve Goodman in 1978, could be his signature album, with hot vocals and clean musical licks.

He's recorded with a handful of labels during his career, often with marginal success, but he formed his own label, Oh Boy, in the mid-1980s. He earned a Grammy nomination in 1988 for "John Prine Live" and won the coveted trophy in 1991 for "The Missing Years," which features such guests as Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty.

Tickets: $37 and $33, on sale at the box office. 528-0506.
