GOLF BRIEFS
College workshop at Lihu'e Library

The Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association will sponsor a college workshop on Kaua'i, Oct. 27, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. It will be in the Lihu'e Public Library conference room.

Students of all ages are invited, especially those interested in participating in a college sport. Students from 12 and up can benefit from the workshop, which will feature a panel of local and Mainland Division I coaches, players and parents.

Topics will include recommended timelines for academic preparation, entrance requirements for college, athletic preparation, NCAA regulations, the recruitment process, financial aid, scholarships, how to get noticed by coaches, and student-athlete life. Literature on career golf opportunities will be available, along with the Ping American College Golf Guide.

The workshop is free to HSJGA members and $5 for non-members. Registration is not necessary. For more information, call the HSJGA at 532-0559 on O'ahu.

MasterCard tourney qualifiers

With four official events remaining on the 2002 Senior PGA Tour schedule, including this week's Turtle Bay Championship, 36 players are eligible for the 2003 MasterCard Championship.

J.C. Snead, Don Pooley, Tom Jenkins, Stewart Ginn, Hubert Green and Morris Hatalsky qualified with victories this summer. Snead's win at the Greater Baltimore Classic was his first since 1995. Hatalsky, a senior rookie, won for the first time at the Uniting Fore Care Classic, after competing all year as a Monday qualifier or sponsor exemption.

The MasterCard Championship opens the senior season Jan. 31-Feb. 2 at Hualalai Golf Club on the Big Island.

To qualify for MasterCard, players must have won a senior major in the last five years, an official event in the last two years or receive a sponsor exemption. Exemptions are limited to exempt players with a minimum of 30 combined (PGA and Senior PGA) career victories.

Tom Kite is defending champion.

Tickets are available by calling 1-800-417-2770.
