Ballard, Kennelly surf into quarterfinal

Kaua'i surfers Rochelle Ballard and Keala Kennelly advanced to the quarterfinals of the Roxy Pro France yesterday in 3- to 5-foot waves at Hossegor, France.

Ballard defeated Australian Kate Skarratt in the third round, and Kennelly eliminated Australian Serena Brooke.

Waialua's Megan Abubo, who won the previous women's world tour event in Portugal last week, was eliminated by South Africa's Heather Clark.

The men's Quiksilver Pro France completed half of the second round yesterday, but the Hawai'i surfers (Shane Dorian, Andy Irons and Kalani Robb) did not see action.

CROSS COUNTRY

Kamehameha to host meet: Five California teams will compete in tomorrow's Kamehameha Invitational cross country meet.

The meet starts at 9 a.m. at the intermediate soccer field and will include all Interscholastic League of Honolulu teams and also feature a team from the Kamehameha Schools Big Island campus.

TENNIS

BYUH advances in regionals: The BYU-Hawai'i tennis players swept their matches on the first day of the ITA West Regional Tennis Tournament yesterday at Pomona, Calif.

For the men, top-seeded Jan Krejci won in straight sets as did teammate and second-seed Peter Madarassy. The two teamed up in doubles for a pair of wins, 8-2 and 8-0, to advance to today's semifinals.

For the women, BYUH's top-seed Adrienn Hegedus and second-seed Amy Sun won in straight sets. The two will begin their doubles play today.

Play continues today and tomorrow. The winners of the tournament will advance to the ITA National Tournament.
