Take the family to Kailua for another 'Windward Sunset'

Advertiser Staff

Kailua's last "Sunset on the Beach" event suffered from a soggy start. Today's festivities include an open market, entertainment and lots of food.

January's "Sunset on the Beach" in Kailua got rained out somewhat, but that didn't stop organizers from presenting another one this weekend. Now called "Windward Sunset in the Park" and including the Kane'ohe, Ka'a'awa and Waimanalo communities, the festivities began last night and continue today and tomorrow at Kailua District Park.

An open market from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. each day will feature more than 100 vendors. Entertainment begins at noon.

Movies, of course, are part of the equation: "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" will be screened at 7 tonight; "The Scorpion King," featuring Hawai'i's own Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock) and Kelly Hu, will be screened tomorrow. As a special tribute to musical legend Auntie Irmgard Aluli, who died a year ago, the short biographical film "Puamana" will be shown before "The Scorpion King."

Food, did we forget food? Vendors will include Boston's North End Pizza, Moani's Country Cafe, Saeng's Thai Cuisine and a lot more.

Admission is free. 523-CITY (2489).
