Campbell runs over Leilehua

By Stacy Kaneshiro
Advertiser Staff Writer

A simple adjustment was all Campbell needed to beat Leilehua, 42-28, in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association West football game last night.

An Aloha Stadium crowd of 3,243 at Campbell's homecoming saw the Sabers (4-1), ranked 10th in The Advertiser Top 10, keep their division-title hopes alive by winning their fourth consecutive game. Campbell has a half-game lead over Wai'anae, which plays Radford tonight.

By losing, the Mules (3-3) will need to win their remaining game for a chance at one of the top four slots in the 10-team OIA tournament.

Campbell running back Shauncey-Blaine Saito rushed for 171 yards on 11 carries, scoring three touchdowns, the longest a 55-yarder in the fourth quarter to squelch a Leilehua comeback.

After watching Leilehua quarterback Joshua Perez exploit the perimeter with his bootlegs and rollout passes, the Sabers' defensive ends — Dustin Kalili and David Veikune — contained Perez in the second half to aid in the Campbell's 28-point second-half outburst.

"He was rolling out so we just started shooting our linemen out, an outside twist so we'd get containment on him," Campbell coach Tumoana Kenessey said.

Added Kalili: "Coach told us to take the outside shoulder on the two blockers. That forced (Perez to stay in the pocket)."

The Mules had rallied from a 14-0 first-quarter deficit when Perez engineered two second-quarter scoring drives. He capped an 11-play, 77-yard drive with a four-yard run. After Bernard Hay recovered the ensuing kickoff for Leilehua at the Campbell 21, Perez quickly got the Mules on the board again with a 21-yard pass to Daylen Hale. Running back Cedric Thomas ran in the two-point conversion to tie the score at 14.

In the second half, the Sabers' defense kept Perez contained on Leilehua's first series. The Sabers got the ball at midfield after a punt and used four running plays with Saito scoring from 21 yards on a sweep behind pulling guards Gavan Grance and Valasi Tagaloa.

The Mules had a golden opportunity to tie again on their next series. After starting at their 18, they moved to the Sabers' 5. But on third-and-4, linebacker Isaac Laupola recovered a Thomas fumble.

"That fumble changed the complexion of the game," Leilehua coach Jake Kawamata said.

Campbell was forced to punt and although Leilehua got possession at the Campbell 35, it could not sustain a drive against the Sabers' aroused defense. A tackle for minus yards by Kalili and a blistering hit by Alii Basham on Leilehua receiver Shaun Somera caused an incomplete pass. The Mules eventually punted.

The Sabers scored on their next three possessions to deny any Leilehua comeback.

The Sabers amassed 439 yards, 410 through rushing. Saito wasn't the only one to reach the century mark. Running back Romeo Mayrena had 111 yards on 13 carries and two touchdowns.

"We knew what they were doing," Kawamata said. "We just weren't able to execute."

Kenessey said he was pleased with the way his team adjusted against the Mules.

"They took the challenge and stepped up and played well," he said.
