UH-Hilo beats BYUH in PacWest volleyball

Cheriesse Shiroma had 16 kills and 11 blocks as Hawai'i-Hilo handed Brigham Young University-Hawai'i, ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division II, its first loss of the season in a college women's volleyball match last night in Hilo.

The scores were 30-21, 20-30, 35-33, 21-30, 15-12.

Sara Pilgreen had 20 kills and 14 digs for the Vulcans, who improved to 6-10 overall and 2-3 in the Pacific West Conference. Tiffanie Ollison added 13 kills and Emily Hutchinson 12.

Yu Chuan Weng had 30 kills and 12 digs for BYUH (12-1, 3-1). Chun Yi Lin added 20 kills and Ashley Moeai 17 for the Seasiders.

TENNIS

BYUH stays unbeaten: Brigham Young-Hawai'i tennis players swept their singles and doubles matches on the second day of the ITA West Regional Tennis Tournament yesterday at Pomona, Calif.

The Seasiders have not lost a match in the tournament, winning 17 straight, including 11 yesterday.

On the men's side, top-seeded Jan Krejci of BYUH beat Sonoma State's Mike Morrison and UC-Davis' Paul Dilloway. Second-seeded Peter Madarassy of BYUH beat David Nguyen of Cal Poly-Pomona and Sonoma State's Nestor Bernabe.

Krejci and Madarassy also teamed in doubles to beat Bryan Swatt and Sean Neagle of UC-San Diego.

On the women's side, top-seeded Adrienn Hegedus of BYUH won a pair of singles matches over Gretchen Shantz of UC-Davis and Nikita Bhardwaj of Grand Canyon. Second-seeded Amy Sun of BYUH beat Brianna Bailey of Sonoma State and Katharina Menzel of Cal State-Los Angeles.

Hegedus and Sun also opened doubles play with a pair of victories.Ê

The winners of the regional tournament will advance to the ITA National Tournament.

SURFING

Irons, Robb advance: Hawai'i surfers Andy Irons and Kalani Robb advanced to the fourth round of the Quiksilver Pro France yesterday.

The third round was completed in 3- to 5-foot waves at Hossegor, France.

Irons, who is ranked No. 1 on surfing's World Championship Tour, defeated Australian Troy Brooks yesterday. Irons took control of the heat with a score of 9.0 (out of 10) for a long barrel ride.

Robb received scores of 8.0 and 6.0 in his victory over Australian Nathan Webster.

Shane Dorian of Kailua, Kona, was eliminated by Australia's Beau Emerton.

The women's Roxy Pro France did not run any heats.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Metzger, Wong reach semifinals: Hawai'i's Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong won three matches yesterday to advance to the semifinals of a $150,000 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event at Fortaleza, Brazil.
