Kalihi fire leaves two homeless

A fire at Kuhio Park Terrace in Kalihi left a woman and child homeless last night.

HFD Capt. Richard Soo said the Red Cross was helping the 35-year-old woman and her 4-year-old son find shelter.

The fire in Building B, apartment 608 was reported at 7:15 p.m., Soo said. No one was home at the time. Soo said the fire started in one of the apartment's two bedrooms. It was under control by 7:44 and extinguished by 7:55.

The cause was undetermined last night.

Hikers stranded overnight on trail

Five stranded hikers were spending the night on a ridge on Kahana Loop Trail on the Windward Side last night.

The hikers called HFD at 8:32 p.m. last night, said Capt. Richard Soo and rescuers were able to locate them. However, it was unsafe for the Air One HFD helicopter to pick them up last night, Soo said.

He said none of the hikers was injured and they had built a fire to stay warm.

"We'll pick them up at first light when it's safe," Soo said.

Dick Pacific wins Army bid

Dick Pacific Construction Co. Ltd. of Honolulu was awarded a $43.7 million Army contract for construction of a barracks complex at Wheeler Army Airfield.

The work includes construction of three barracks buildings, a soldier community/central plant building and two company operations facilities.

The contract also covers renovation of two existing buildings to accommodate company operations facilities and battalion operations facilities.

"I'm especially pleased that this award went to a Hawai'i company," said U.S. Rep. Neil Abercrombie, D-Hawai'i, in announcing the award. "It shows that Island contractors can compete successfully for military business against Mainland firms."

The estimated date for completion of the contract is Jan. 10, 2005. Associated work covered by the contract includes storm drainage, a sewer and water system and electrical service.

Kona officer investigated

A Big Island police officer is has been suspended for allegedly revealing confidential information to people under federal investigation.

The Kona officer was notified late Friday afternoon that he was being suspended, according to acting Police Chief Lawrence Mahuna. The statement did not say if the unnamed officer will receive pay during the suspension period.

The officer is being investigated by the Hilo and Kona branches of the department's Criminal Investigation Section and by federal authorities on suspicion of hindering investigation.

The nature of the federal investigation was not revealed.

The officer also is the subject of an administrative investigation by the Internal Affairs Unit for alleged violation of several department rules and procedures, the announcement said.

The officer has been with the Hawaii County Police Department for four years and was assigned to patrol duty.

Traffic calming topic in Manoa

The city will sponsor a traffic-calming workshop for Manoa residents from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Manoa Valley District Park meeting room.

The purpose of the meeting is to gather suggestions from residents for traffic calming along Woodlawn Drive and Alani Drive.

Candidates to speak at forum

The Hawai'i Kai Neighborhood Board will have a forum Tuesday for candidates in City Council District 4 and for Board of Education.

The forum will begin at 7:20 p.m. at the Haha'ione Elementary School cafeteria. Board member Bob Clark will moderate.

The next board meeting will be at 7 p.m. Oct. 29 at the school cafeteria.
