Metzger, Wong in volleyball final

Fifth-seeded Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong of Hawai'i upset top-seeded Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos of Brazil, 21-18, 21-19, yesterday to advance to today's final of the $150,000 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour event at Fortaleza, Brazil.

Metzger and Wong will face second-seeded Marcio Araujo and Benjamin Insfran of Brazil for the $22,500 first-place prize.

Araujo and Insfran reached the final after winning by forfeit over Jefferson Bellaguarda and Juca Dultra, when Bellaguarda was sidelined with cramps.


GOLF

• Hawai'i golfers trail: Wahiawa's Beverly Kim shot a 12-over-par 84 and was 10 strokes behind leader Nancy Smith of North Port, Fla., after the first round of stroke play at the 41st USGA Senior Women's at Mid-Pines Inn and Golf Club at Southern Pines, N.C.

Marsha Butler of San Diego, Deborah Anderson of Redlands, Calif. and Toni Wiesner of Fort Worth, Texas, were tied at 75.

Honolulu's Lily Yao shot an opening-round 91.

The top 64 (of 132 golfers) after today's second round will advance to match play.


SURFING

• Kaua'i women third: Kaua'i surfers Rochelle Ballard and Keala Kennelly tied for third place in the Roxy Pro France yesterday.

The final day of competition was completed in 4- to 5-foot waves at Hossegor, France.

Ballard and Kennelly were both eliminated in the semifinals.

Ballard lost to world champion Layne Beachley of Australia; Kennelly was eliminated by Peru's Sofia Mulanovich.

Ballard posted a near-perfect ride of 9.75 (out of 10) in her quarterfinal victory over Australian Lynette MacKenzie.

Beachley went on to defeat Mulanovich in the final for the $10,000 top prize.

Beachley took over the No. 1 ranking on the women's World Championship Tour. Through four of five events on this year's tour, she has 3,200 points.

Kennelly is No. 4 with 2,380; Ballard is No. 9 with 2,160; Waialua's Megan Abubo is No. 11 with 2,050.

• Irons vs. Robb: Hawai'i surfers Andy Irons and Kalani Robb won fourth round heats yesterday to set up a quarterfinal match-up against each other in the men's Quiksilver Pro France, which was also held yesterday at Hossegor, France.

Irons, who is ranked No. 1 on the men's World Championship Tour, posted the highest scores of the fourth round. His two best rides received scores of 9.15 and 9.0 in his victory over Taylor Knox of California.

Robb edged Maz Quinn of New Zealand, 11.0-9.0.

The final day of competition will be held either today or tomorrow.


CROSS COUNTRY

• UH fourth: Junior Victoria Chang and freshman Hanna Bremler placed 7th and 10th, respectively, to pace the University of Hawai'i cross country team to fourth place at the Willamette Invitational 5K in Salem, Ore.

Idaho won yesterday's meet with 46 points, followed by Auburn with 47. UH had 133 points in the nine-team field.

Letiwe Marakurwa of Idaho won the individual title in 16 minutes, 57 seconds. Chang finished in 17:20, with Bremler at 17:28.

Chaminade's cross country team finished 38th out of 40 teams in the men's 8K race.
