UH faculty recognized

The following University of Hawai'i faculty were named recipients of the Hung Wo and Elizabeth Lau Ching Service to the Community Award:

David Bangert, associate professor in the Department of Management and Industrial Relations in the College of Business Administration at UH-Manoa.

Since joining CBA, Bangert has volunteered his services to Aloha United Way, the Waianae Coast Coalition and Campbell Estate.

He has also advised the governor on such topics as the effective functioning of state government and telemedicine.

He has served on the UH Program on Conflict Resolution Steering Committee since 1997.

Donna Ching is an extension specialist in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences in the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources at UH-Manoa.

She has established herself as one of the premier advocates of processes designed to make groups more effective in their planning.

She has provided services to 58 different agencies in Hawai'i, including Youth organizations, state agencies and community-based programs, and has served on eight community boards.

Ralph Kouchi, assistant professor of welding and machine shop, has been a Kaua'i Community College faculty member since 1977. He has worked with disadvantaged high school students during summer breaks, been involved in volunteer efforts with the Menehune Fish Pond, worked with students from Ni'ihau, coordinated the construction of the greenhouse on the Kaua'i campus, and helped build Kaua'i Community College's nationally recognized solar car.

Nelda Quensell, a botany instructor, has been teaching at Kapiolani Community College for 25 years. She has been active as a facilitator and participant in the service learning initiatives, which offer learning options to students in the botany and biology programs.

He started and maintains the native gardens at Kapi'olani Community College and volunteers at Lyon Arboretum's micropropagation laboratory. He also helps restore taro patches at Mount Ka'ala.
