THE LEFT LANE
For the grown-ups

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Many parents discover that one of the joys of parenthood is getting to do things you haven't done since you were a kid — for example, delve deeply into the world of children's books for the nightly read-aloud. Here, they rediscover how well written, universally appealing and timeless many of these books are. Now the Children's Book Council has released a guide to children's books that appeal to grown-ups, too. It's called "NOT Just for Children Anymore" and it's available by calling toll-free (800) 999-2160 or visiting www.cbcbooks.org. Or order by mail at: Catalog Orders, The Children's Book Council, 12 W. 37th St., 2nd floor, New York, NY 10018-7480. Cost is $4 plus $4.50 for shipping and handling.

Hawai'i flavor fills film

SANDLER
"Punch-Drunk Love," an Adam Sandler comedy tentatively opening here Oct. 18, will feature the Islands in setting and song.

The film, which won a Best Director prize for Paul Thomas Anderson at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival, is a quirky tale about a guy who spent $3,000 on 12,150 cups of Healthy Choice pudding to earn 1.25 million frequent flier miles. Anderson, who read about the gimmick in Time magazine, wrote the screenplay expressly for Sandler.

The Royal Hawaiian Hotel, the fabled Pink Palace, is a key filming site. And the soundtrack includes vintage music: Ladies K perform Andy Cummings' classic "Waikiki" and snippets of Johnny Noble's and M.K. Moke's "Moana Chimes" also can be heard.

Intense, yet cool

Urban. Audacious. Flashy. Glam. I-Iman makeup is not for the timid. Created by supermodel/actress Iman, wife of David Bowie, the line is hip, sexy and cool. The deep colors are best suited to women with darker skin tones, so it works for a lot of outdoorsy island women. This fall the color story is all about smudged blues, smeared reds and iridescent browns. The "in" nail color: silver metallic, worn just on the pinky.

I-Iman's intensity of shades can be intimidating to the uninitiated. That's why Marc Kuykendall, Iman's national makeup artist, will visit Sephora Ala Moana to offer tips and free makeovers to Iman aficionados. Dates: Oct. 26 and 27, from 1 to 4 p.m. Appointments: 944-9797.
