Alabama agrees to '03 game

Advertiser Staff

FRAZIER
The University of Hawai'i and Alabama will meet for a second consecutive year, in 2003, UH athletic director Herman Frazier announced.

The Nov. 29, 2003, game completes the Warriors' schedule for that year, filling a void left when Virginia cancelled for a second time.

It will be back-to-back visits by the Crimson Tide, who play the Warriors Nov. 30 at Aloha Stadium.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for us to play an upper-echelon team from the Southeastern Conference," Frazier said in a statement. "It keeps us within the scheduling philosophy I mentioned when I got here, and we will continue to pursue those types of teams for our nonconference games."

UH's other nonconference opponents in 2003 are Akron and Army at Aloha Stadium and Southern California and Nevada-Las Vegas on the road.

Alabama became available both years when it was hit with an NCAA probation, including a ban on postseason appearances.

The Crimson Tide are billing these games as their "unofficial bowl games."

"We have had an overwhelming positive response to the decision to play there this season," Alabama athletic director Mal Moore said in a statement. "Our players were very responsive and many expressed an interest in returning next season. This will be an added bonus to our players and fans."

Frazier has said Alabama has requested 6,000 tickets, double its original allotment, for this year's meeting in Hawai'i. That game will be shown nationally on ESPN.

Alabama is expected to receive a guarantee of about $250,000 from UH, including discounts on travel and lodging.
