BOXING

Miyose on U.S. team: Wai'anae boxer Glenn Miyose Jr. has been selected to represent USA Boxing at the 2002 USA vs. Dominican Republic Duals in Harvey, Ill., on Oct. 18 and 20.

Miyose, 17, will compete in the open-adult class.

The Wai'anae High senior won the Under-19 National Championship in August and qualified for the 19-under World Championships last month in Cuba.

However, Miyose turned down the all-expenses-paid trip to Cuba fearing that he would fall behind in school and ruin his 4.0 grade-point average.

A family member said Miyose chose to compete at this month's competition because the boxer felt he could make up the missed class time, but he couldn't afford to miss nearly a month at the world championships last month.

Miyose boxes for the Westbrook Boxing Club in Wai'anae.
